about

~ memories and recollections ~
when we began recording this album in june of 2001, we had played only one show and our sound was still developing. we decided in the writing process that we wanted the production to be very minimal. feel was the key and raw was good. we went into our make-shift studio with ten songs, three of which did not make it on the album and one song, pentagramagraph, was written on the second day of tracking drums. the abandoned songs were lefteover from a band called twelve thirty dreamtime. a hard rock power-pop band that scooter, shawn and i had been in for ten years prior to the new millennium. three of the four songs brought from twelve thirty dreamtime were cut from the final album, but it was stone county line that was the song to turn our songwriting back towards our roots. those roots being hard rock and metal from the 1970s. no matter what experimenting we did or what phases we went through in our musical journey up to that point, the music always had a hard rock influence. the first song we wrote as mos generator was lumbo rock. the main riff was lifted from a song called mizz marvel by our good friends the golden pig electric blues band. the term “lumbo” was used by older cousin to reference columbian gold. it’s a poetic song about the quest. stone county line is about bootlegging whiskey and running moonshine. i have heard stories over the years about how some of my family had been bootleggers during prohibition. i thought it would make a good song topic. acapulco gold is another sonnet to the sweet leaf. i had just bought a wurlitzer 200a electric piano and the verses of this song were a great place to feature this instrument. the main riff was written by shawn. he had a cassette of riffs that we would rifle through and take from when we needed to. f-1 was a song about shawn. his dad used to jokingly call him fuckup #1 so that is where the song title came from. the title for sleeping your way to the middle came from a musician friend who was having a rant about his newly ex’d girlfriend saying she was sleeping her way to the middle. this song is an example of how shawn and scooter would help me with arranging and quality control. i wasn’t into the riff but shawn really liked it so i continued to work on it until it became what ended up on the record. for the next six years, sleeping was used as the catalyst for our live freeform jam section which could sometimes push upwards of fifteen minutes. y’juana is a lumbering heavy/pop beast and probably my favorite song on the album. i don’t remember anything about writing the song or where it came from but i feel it came to me without much effort. the last song on the album and the last song to be recorded was pentagramagraph. the main riff and title were ideas from shawn. once again, his riff tape got a spin and this is what we found. the arrangement for pentagragraph was completed on the second day of doing drum tracks and recorded the next day. it was only 24 hours old when it was recorded. it was also the genesis of the sound we would deeply explore on our next record. the heavy/prog concept album
“the late great planet earth”.
the mos generator was first released on cd only in march 2002. we didn’t have much luck finding a label to release it (there weren’t many labels putting out this kind of music in 2001) so I put it out on my label, music abuse records. 1000 copies were pressed, and it sold out in just over a year. in 2011 ripple music did a 10-year anniversary edition in a vinyl/cd set with the leftover studio tracks and a live show from 2002 as bonus tracks. for that release, i remixed all the tracks to give them a fresh perspective. i also did that because i couldn’t locate unmastered original mixes and i didn’t want to re-release the masters from the original cd because i wasn’t happy with the sound. the ripple release also featured a reproduction of the original artwork. the music abuse version had very low-resolution artwork and when it was blown up to album size it looked terrible so i reshot most of the photos to build the album cover. in late 2020 i located the unmastered original 2001 mixes of the album and the original photos in the cover collage. Although still low res, i was able to reconstruct the cover to look nice as a 12”x12” album sleeve. I’m very excited to be presenting this original mix and artwork as it would have been released on vinyl 20 years ago. - reed, january 2021

about

Mos Generator Port Orchard, Washington

"If there's such a thing as fusing some soul into a doom palette, MOS GENERATOR has achieved that. Seldom will you hear an unambiguous merge between the two outside of BLACK SABBATH's "Sabotage". Mos Generator have tapped into a loud vibe featuring sinister and coarse nuances yet with something revealing far more heart". Ray Van Horn Jr.- Blabbermouth ... more
